Over the past 30 years Guitar Works, Inc. has taught some half a millon lessons to thousands of Virginians of all ages, of all levels and music styles how to play the guitar, bass, banjo and mandolin. Guitar Works is unique with owner/founder Brian Medas having a performance and University music education background. (see bio under "staff profiles") He sets the tone for a higher level of instruction not normally found in a retail setting.
Our 20 experienced professional instructors are both respected performers and teachers with backgrounds in education. They teach a variety of styles: blues, bluegrass, classical, country, folk, jazz, pop, rock and worship. With students ranging from age 7 and up the lessons are tailored to the individual student. With their experience and education the instructors are able to teach both the student interested in technique, music theory and musicianship and reading music or tablature as well as the student interested in a more casual study, playing just for fun and without reading music. Tired of playing music in your room by yourself? Do you and your friends talk about forming a band, but it ends up being...just talk? Join the dozens of guitarists, bassists and drummers who "took it to the next level" last summer at our five-day Summersessions workshops. Take the opportunity to really play in a band, not just "play along" with recordings. You'll rehearse a 15-minute set for two hours a day, Monday through Thursday, and perform outdoors on Friday for friends, family, and whoever else wants to listen! You'll be amazed at how good you can really sound when you learn how to rehearse effectively, and you may just meet the members of your new band!
