(so include a small or petite 7 year old) The size and weight of the body is manageable and the spacing of the frets and the length of the neck is right for the width of their left hand. With over 30 years experience we strongly recommend starting these children on a nylon string guitar like this one. The majority of children this age do not have the hand strength to push or hold down steel strings. Just as important nylon strings are super soft to the touch allowing them to play all day if they'd like without getting soar fingers. Should a string snap and hit a child (as a curious child turns the keys too far) nylon strings are much safer than steel. They are soft and very low tension.
